Here’s your chance to own seldom-seen early U.S. gold issues from the long-lived 1840-1907 $2.50 Liberty Head gold series. Plus, the coins offered here were struck in 1853 & 1854 during the famed California Gold Rush. As gold flooded into the San Francisco area from the mines, it was converted into bullion and shipped to the Philadelphia Mint – where these coins were struck.
Though mintages of these small denomination 90% gold coins increased during the 1850s due to the influx of gold, many circulated or were made into jewelry. Later, even more survivors were lost to the gold melts of the 20th century. Now, more than 165 years later, experts estimate that fewer than 1,800 of these two dates combined survive in any grade. We have a total of only 8 pieces available, so be sure to order quickly.
