Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 90% silver Liberty Seated quarter was introduced in 1838. The obverse depicts Liberty seated on a rock, her left hand holding a liberty cap on a pole, and her right hand holding a shield. After a design modification in 1840, drapery, or gown material, flows from Liberty`s left elbow. Only 43,000 of the 1840-O quarters bear the altered design.
