The second-year-of-issue 1840 Liberty Seated half dollar featured "small letters" on the reverse - in the united states of america legend and in the half dol. statement of denomination. An experiment with larger letters was tried with a portion of the 1840 coins, though the large lettering would not become a permanent feature of the series until partway through 1842. The 1840 Small Letters half dollar was struck in 90% fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint over 165 years ago.
