An important early U.S. gold piece – it’s the first U.S. gold piece ever struck at the New Orleans Mint! It’s also the only “O” Mint issue among all the Classic Head gold coin denominations, and is from the last year of issue for the $2.50 Classic Head gold series.
Just 17,781 were struck. Most circulated heavily and many were made into jewelry. Today the 1839-O is seldom seen in AU-58 and higher grades. It’s offered here in Choice About Uncirculated, AU-58, graded by our experts and certified by NGC. To date, NGC has certified just 81 in this grade. We have just this one available.
