This variety occurred when the second 8 on dies bearing 1818 dates were over-struck with a 9, for use in striking 1819-dated coins. However, the 8 is still visible behind the 9. Because the "9" was smaller in size than the existing numerals (and a larger 9 was later used), this coin is known as the Small 9 Over 8 variety. This interesting 1819 half dollar was struck in 89.24% fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, which was the only U.S. Mint facility at the time.
