Last of the Jagiellon line, Louis II was King of Hungary and Bohemia from 1516 to 1526. Intelligent, but inexperienced, the 20-year-old died during the Battle of Mohács on the Danube River. The victorious Turks and Austrian Habsburgs then divided the kingdom that had been united by his father. Struck during Louis II’s reign, this silver coin is over 500 years old. The obverse depicts the Hungarian Árpád stripes, double cross, Dalmatian leopard heads, Bohemian lion and at the center, the Polish Jagiellon eagle. The reverse features the Crowned Madonna and Child. Lettering around the inner rim translates into PATRONESS OF HUNGARY. Add this affordable silver denarius to your world coin collection!
