Zeno was originally allied with Leo I against the barbarian general Aspar. When Zeno`s sickly 7-year-old son Leo II died, he became emperor. Almost immediately, Zeno fell victim to political intrigue, and escaped across the Bosporus in A.D. 475, his first reign lasting barely two months. A little more than a year and a half later, in A.D. 476, Zeno regained the throne. He ruled for another 17 years before dying of natural causes.
