By A.D. 259 the Roman Empire had become too big to effectively rule. For nearly 15 years Gaul, Spain and Britain survived separately as breakaway provinces, making up the Gallic Empire. Marius succeeded Postumus, and ruled for about 3 months in A.D. 268. Once a blacksmith by trade before joining the army, he was reputed to have great strength in his body and hands. Ironically, some stories state that he was killed by a sword in which he had forged.
