At its peak, the Parthian Empire stretched from the Himalayas to modern-day Afghanistan. But by the time Vologases VI inherited his kingdom in A.D. 208, years of unrest had left the empire in a precarious position. While Vologases reigned for several years as the uncontested ruler, in A.D. 214, his brother, Artabanus IV, led a revolt. Supported by the Roman emperor, Caracalla, the rebellion would last for two years before the 17-year-old Vologases would perish. Less than 10 years later, Artabanus would follow in his brother’s steps. He would also be killed in a revolt, bringing an end to the more than 400-year-old Parthian Empire.

Now you can travel back in time with this silver Drachm honoring Vologases VI, more than 1,800 years after his death.
