A.D. 193-211 Septimius Severus Silver Denarius Honoring Carthage, Very Fine

Now you can own hand struck silver Denarii issued under Septimius Severus and his son, Caracalla. Struck nearly 1,800 years ago, the reverse of each coin depicts Cybele holding a thunderbolt while riding a lion leaping over a stream. As the favorite deity of the city of Carthage, the image of Cybele represents not only Septimius Severus' devotion to his North African homeland, but that of his eldest son as well. In fact, Severus' loyalty was so great, he bestowed a special recognition on the city. With this honor, the city would have earned the right to self-govern, and would have been exempt from taxes. This coin was struck under Septimius Severus, Rome's first soldier-emperor who founded a dynasty that lasted over 40 years.
