Issued to honor the 300th anniversary of the first European settlement on Long Island, NY, this classic half dollar recalls the early Dutch exploration and trade with the Native Americans. Howard Weinman, son of legendary A.A. Weinman, created the design. The obverse of this lustrous 90% silver half pictures overlapping heads of a Dutch settler and an Algonquin Indian. The reverse shows a three-masted Dutch ship. This coin was important because it was the first issue that had a specified date (1936) regardless of the year minted.
