The 1916-S was the final San Francisco issue of the Indian Head $5 gold pieces (which were the last series of circulating U.S. $5 gold coins). This collector favorite depicts a proud Indian chief on the obverse and an impressive eagle on the reverse. The design is best known for its unprecedented incuse style, in which the elements and lettering are crafted below the flat surfaces of the coin rather than in relief above the coin surfaces.
