Only 121,540 Indian Head $10 gold pieces (also called eagles) were struck at the Denver Mint in 1909. This was only the 4th year of operation for the Denver Mint, which opened in 1906 to serve the coinage needs of the central and Rocky Mountain regions of the country. The 1909-D eagles feature a stunning depiction of Liberty wearing a magnificently detailed Indian headdress. The stately eagle on the reverse is equally impressive in its artistry and detail.
