These coins feature a unique design crafted by Bela Lyon Pratt – protégé of Saint-Gaudens. Pratt’s obverse design featured the profile of a Native American male in a headdress, with an eagle on the reverse similar to that on Saint-Gaudens’ $10 coin. In a departure from traditional “Liberty Head” coinage, Pratt chose to use an intaglio (also called incuse) relief – with the design sunk below the surface of the coin.
