U.S. half dollars carried the Liberty Seated design for over 50 years from 1839 to 1891, and were due for a change. Barber half dollars, struck in 90% silver and named for their designer, Charles E. Barber, debuted in 1892. These coins feature the profile of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, with a wreath of laurel encircling her head. An adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States is found on the reverse. The 1900-S Barber half dollar represents the final series issue of the 19th century.
