Created to help coin vast quantities of newly-discovered California gold, James B. Longacre’s $20 obverse design was slightly modified from that of his predecessor, Christian Gobrecht. The reverse shows a bold Heraldic Eagle design. In 1866, the motto in god we trust was added above the eagle’s head, and from 1877-1907, the denomination was spelled out as twenty dollars.
