Featuring one of the best-known U.S. coinage designs, the Liberty Head $20 gold pieces of 1849-1907 were authorized following the major discovery of gold in California in 1848 (no $20 coins had previously been minted). Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin bears the profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed liberty. The reverse depicts a shield and an eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows. The motto in god we trust was added above the eagle in 1866.
