Introduced in 1866 to replace unpopular 5&cent; Fractional Notes, this first-ever 5&cent; nickel features a Union Shield on the obverse and numeral "5" surrounded by rays and stars on the reverse. The reverse was attacked as emulating the Confederate flag&#39;s "stars and bars", creating suspicion that rebel supporters were operating within the mint. The rays also impaired striking quality, and were removed early in 1867, creating the short-lived "With Rays" variety.
