As a collector of antiquities myself, I’m excited to offer you this 700-year-old silver Basilicon for the first time in our catalogs! Hand struck between A.D. 1294-1320 during the Byzantine Empire, each nicely detailed coin features a portrait of Christ on a throne with his hand raised in benediction and holding the book of gospels.
Two emperors are shown on the reverse – Andronicus II and Michael IX. Lasting from 1282-1328, Andronicus’ reign was marked by a reduction in land forces and an elimination of the navy. However, his sponsorship of the arts led to a cultural revival. His son, Michael IX, was known as a brave soldier with a strong moral fiber. He co-ruled alongside his father from 1295 until his death at the hands of mercenaries in 1320.
Well-preserved for over 700 years in Very Fine or better condition, each coin is a true piece of history that’s been certified by NGC. Opportunities like this don’t happen often, so I urge you to order quickly to secure this relic from an age of faith. This also makes a fitting gift as the holiday season approaches.
