Legal Tender Notes, also known as United States Notes, were introduced during the Civil War. The size was reduced to modern standards with Series 1928. Only $1, $2, $5, and $100 Legal Tender Notes were issued in the smaller size, and the $100 notes are in great demand among collectors as the highest face value currency of this type. The face of the Series 1966 $100 Legal Tender Note bears a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, has Granahan-Fowler signatures, and features a red seal and serial numbers. The back depicts Independence Hall.
