After years of producing large quantities of Morgan silver dollars, the Philadelphia Mint struck only 378,000 Morgan dollars in 1893. This is a small number for the main U.S. Mint, and the 1893 silver dollar is significantly scarce in all grades today!
- Struck in 90% silver
- In 1893, the purchase of silver for coinage was restricted mainly to silver contained in gold deposits and existing surpluses
- This was bad news for the silver dollar – but good news for collectors!
- It resulted in some of the lowest-mintage coins in the 1878-1921 series
- 3rd lowest-mintage Philadelphia Mint Morgan
The quality of the strike is above average on the 1893, so even coins in lower Circulated grades will be attractive to own – a good thing considering that any 1893 Morgan is a prized acquisition!
