<p>Created to help coin vast quantities of newly-discovered California gold, James B. Longacre&rsquo;s $20 obverse design was slightly modified from that of his predecessor, Christian Gobrecht. The reverse shows a bold Heraldic Eagle design. In 1866, the motto <span sx="{'fontVariant': 'small-caps'}">in god we trust</span> was added above the eagle&rsquo;s head, and from 1877-1907, the denomination was spelled out as <span sx="{'fontVariant': 'small-caps'}">twenty dollars</span>.</p><br/>
