US Innovation Dollars
In 2018, the US Mint launched a new series of dollar coins. Known as US Innovation dollars, the series began with a single 2018 issue bearing George Washington's signature as it appeared on the first US patent.

After the initial 2018 issue, four new designs will be released each year 2019-2032. These coins will honor an innovator or innovation from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five US territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. Like Statehood quarters, Innovation dollars will be issued for the 50 states first, in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The District of Columbia and territories issues will then follow.
New Golden Dollars with a New Liberty Design
US Innovation dollars share some features with Native American and Presidential dollars. First, Innovation dollars are "golden" in color. This distinctive and eye-catching hue is due to their composition – manganese brass over a pure copper core. And like other "golden" $1 coins, Innovation dollars bear edge inscriptions for the date, mint mark and motto e pluribus unum. Plus, they are not released into circulation. Like Native American and Presidential dollars, US Innovation dollars are struck in limited quantities for collectors only.
When it comes to design, each coin's obverse showcases the issue's honored innovator or innovation. A common reverse features a dramatic new image of the Statue of Liberty.
Exciting and Educational Series for All Ages
US Innovation dollars are perfect for collectors of any age. The series offers an abundance of educational opportunities, highlighting US innovations, inventions, achievements and individuals who helped shape the world in which we live. Collecting the series can be a fun and exciting way to learn more about both science and America – as well as a great way to bring generations together to share stories from our nation's history.
