Julia Maesa (MEE-sah) was the sister of Julia Domna (Severus' wife), and the grandmother of Elagabalus (A.D. 218-222) and Severus Alexander (A.D. 222-235). She was a woman of intelligence, wealth and courage, who aided Elagabalus' rise through large donations of money to the troops. When she arrived in Rome, she took part in senate proceedings and gave good advice to her grandson – although he did not take it. She survived the assassination of Elagabalus, but died about 3 years later.
