When Marcus Aurelius became emperor, he proclaimed Lucius Verus Augustus. They reigned jointly, creating a precedent often followed later. After Verus` army conquered Armenia, Syria and Mesopotamia, they returned to Rome to celebrate their triumph. However, barbarians had again invaded northern Italy. The emperors left Rome to repel them. On the way home, Verus died, and Aurelius took his body to Rome for burial.
