Now add genuine Civil War currency to your collection – and get in on one of the hottest fields of collecting – with this handsome set! You'll own America's first 5¢ denomination coin – the Shield nickel – and a 5¢ Fractional Note (design may vary). Shortly after the outbreak of war, the U.S. government released Fractional Currency in 1862 to alleviate a coin shortage caused by the hoarding of hard currency. Vintage 5¢ notes, like those offered here, helped make change and allowed business to continue. Fractional currency temporarily solved the problem, but coin shortages continued, even after the war ended, and something else was needed.... It wasn't long before the Shield nickel debuted in 1866, and became an essential part of daily commerce.

Less than 1% of all Fractional Notes ever issued still exist today and they are now prized collectibles! In 1883, Shield nickels were replaced, and vanished into numismatic history, so it's not often that we have enough to offer in our catalogs. Last issued over 130 years ago, both items are in great demand among collectors and recall one of the most significant periods in American history – the Civil War era!
