You can own two major varieties of an obsolete denomination last minted over 125 years ago. Struck from 1865-1889, nickel U.S. three-cent pieces replaced 3¢ Fractional Notes issued during the coin hoarding years of the Civil War and facilitated the purchase of 3¢ postage stamps. When first minted in 1873, the knobs of the 3 in the date were close together and looked much like an 8 (the Closed 3 variety). So the knobs were soon separated and the Open 3 type was created.
Only 390,000 Closed 3 pieces were minted in 1873 and just 783,000 Open 3 coins. This prized set gives you both of these low-mintage varieties nicely detailed. Add these prominent 1873 nickel three-cent pieces to your collection today in a handsome FREE display case.
