In 1864, two different first-year 2¢ varieties were created: the Small and Large Motto. This is the important Large Motto coin, mate to the earlier Small Motto. According to Walter Breen in his Complete Encyclopedia of U.S and Colonial Coins, the Large Motto was created when new dies with larger letters in the motto were put into use.
