Named emperor in A.D. 284, Diocletian created a very efficient new government known as the Tetrarchy - with two co-emperors (one in the east and one in the west), each with his own Caesar (junior colleague and heir to the throne). Diocletian ruled and defended the Eastern Empire, while Maximianus I ruled the west. In A.D. 303, Diocletian celebrated his 20th year as emperor, and in A.D. 305, he abdicated the throne. Diocletian died of natural causes in A. D. 316.
