Phocas became emperor after a rebellion resulted in Maurice Tiberius` murder. Under Phocas` rule, Byzantium suffered through a reign of terror and chaos. The 8 years he ruled were some of the worst. The Empire experienced attacks from the east and west. Worst of all, he unleashed Persian king Khusru, who had waited for the right moment to invade. The governor of Africa sent his son Heraclius to destroy Phocas. He was easily deposed and executed.
