After the death of Commodus, Rome had two emperors, and three generals who were strong and popular enough to also proclaim themselves emperors. Septimius Severus, one of the generals, became emperor after defeating both rivals, Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus. He adopted a military style government, and paid little attention to the Senate. During his rule, he fought in almost every part of the Roman Empire - from England to Syria.
