At the age of 70, Galba, the ambitious governor of Spain, was named emperor by the senate in Rome. Galba ruled during the time known as the Year of Four Emperors. The support of many legions had been secured by the promise of a large bribe, but Galba chose not to pay it, even though he was a wealthy man. This blunder and others like it eventually cost him his life.
