A.D. 306-312 Maxentius Bronze Follis

Maxentius, the son of Maximian, expected to be made Caesar when his father retired - that did not happen. When taxes were levied on Rome, the people proclaimed him emperor. Maxentius then invited his father to return from retirement. They gained control of the Italian peninsula, Africa and Spain. Rome depended on Africa for grain. Maxentius became unpopular when the grain supply diminished after he lost control of Africa. Constantine the Great defeated him in A.D. 312.
