Like many Roman emperors, Vespasian rose in prominence because of his military skills. With the best Roman Legions under his command, he was sent to Palestine to quell the Jewish revolt that had humiliated the 12th Roman Legion. Having conquered all but a few rebel strongholds, he returned to Rome to claim the Imperial title. The reverse of this coin, commemorating Vespasian's victory in Palestine, features a seated weeping Jewess.
