Struck for nearly 3 centuries, the Sestertii's big size captures the fullest expression of the engraver's art, and this coin, minted under Antoninus Pius, displays the emperor's detailed portrait. Pius ruled during Rome's golden age (A.D. 138-161) and was one of the Empire's richest men. He used his money to distribute free oil, grain, and wine in times of famine. Unlike mass-produced coins of today, each bronze Sestertius was struck by hand, so no two are exactly alike. About the size of a half dollar and twice as thick, these attractive coins are always in demand, and whenever we've been able to offer them, they go fast. Don't wait to get yours.
