Rising dust and the beat of horses' hooves alerted people in the sleepy town of Russellville, KY as riders approached. These weren't just any riders... the James Gang was coming to rob the Nimrod Long Bank Company in the spring of 1868. They took between $9,000 and $12,000. Recall that robbery with this 3-coin set. Each set includes a 2¢ piece, a nickel 3¢ and shield nickel – all from 1868, all over 150 years old and all in circulation at the time the outlaws rode.

Jesse James' parents were prosperous Missouri farmers. His father was also a minister and died when Jesse was young. During the Civil War in 1863, the family farm was brutally attacked by Union raiders and Jesse was injured. Shortly thereafter, he joined a Confederate guerrilla group for the remainder of the war.

Afterwards, Jesse returned home, but discovered the quiet life wasn't for him and turned to robbery. Ironically, the bank's former owner, George Norton, and Nimrod Long funded the scholarship which paid for his father's ministry education. Now, you decide if Jesse James was a "Robin Hood" or cold-hearted robber with this 3-coin set displayed in a case with story card.
