Honoring the man who served as Union president during the Civil War, the Lincoln cent features America’s longest-running obverse coin design. But this beloved series began its century-long mintage with a major controversy!

When introduced in 1909 on the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, designer Victor David Brenner’s V.D.B. initials along the lower rim of the reverse were criticized as too prominent and were soon removed. Not until 1918 were Brenner’s initials put back on Lincoln cents, and then in barely noticeable small letters below Lincoln’s shoulder on the obverse next to the rim.

is 3-coin transition set gives you the controversial 1909 V.D.B. cent, the 1909 with no designer initials at all, and the 1918 cent when V.D.B. was restored to the coins in tiny letters. Add these historic Lincoln cent issues to your collection today.
