The historic 1812 Capped Bust half dollar was struck in 89.24% silver during the War of 1812 against Great Britain, fought because America was upset with British failure to withdraw from U.S. territory. The war actually lasted from June 1812 to the spring of 1815, with land battles along the Canadian border, in the Chesapeake Bay region, and along the Gulf of Mexico. Extensive action also took place at sea. Defense of Fort McHenry inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the "Star-Spangled Banner."
