If you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, then this popular Morgan dollar variety is for you! Nicknamed "Alligator Eye" for the short vertical bar below the eyelid, this fun 1887 Morgan dollar error takes its name from the alligator, which has a slit for a pupil. Slight doubling in the die causedthe front of Liberty's eye to have another parallel line to the right of the first, and also double portions of liberty in the headband.
Listed in both The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties and Cherrypicker's Guide, Vol. II, this exciting variety from the Philadelphia Mint is high on every collector's list. Varieties are known as VAMS, and each one has a catalog number – this one being VAM #12. VAMS take their name from avid researchers and silver dollar enthusiasts, Leroy Van Allen and A.
