Struck in Cologne in A.D. 261, the obverse displays a radiate and draped bust of Postumus. Though of humble origin, he became a soldier of great merit. After a rebellion against Rome, he declared himself the first emperor of Gaul, Spain and Britain. The reverse features a galley with rowers traveling left over waves to symbolize the prominent role of naval power in the Gallic Empire.
