When James Fraser redesigned the nickel in 1913, he wanted to "produce a coin which was truly American…", and not be confused with that of any other country. What he came up with was the "Buffalo" nickel – showing a Native American on the obverse and a Buffalo on the reverse.

On the original coins, called Type 1, the buffalo stands on a raised mound and the words FIVE CENTS are in relief. But wear caused the denomination to disappear quickly. So in a few months time, the nickel was redesigned, creating another type. For collectors wanting all of Fraser's original artistry, you shouldn't be without this 1913 Type 1 Buffalo! What's more, this short-lived nickel is in Extra Fine #2-About Uncirculated #2 condition, which lets you appreciate much of the original design and details.
