Introduced in 1916, the beautiful 90% silver Standing Liberty quarter was designed by noted sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil. The obverse of the 1916 and early 1917 coins depicts Liberty standing in a gateway, wearing a gown but with her right breast exposed. Liberty was "covered up" partway through 1917, creating the Type 2 variety used until the end of the series in 1930. Three of the 13 stars on the reverse were moved below the eagle when the design was changed. The 1917 Type 2 coins are prized issues among collectors.
