The Franklin half dollars of 1948-1963 represent the last U.S. coin series struck each year in 90% fine silver. The Roosevelt dime and Washington quarter were struck in .900 silver through 1964, after which the composition changed to copper-nickel clad. The Kennedy half dollar was struck in 90% silver only in its debut year of 1964. The 1953 Franklin half dollar was produced at the Philadelphia Mint during Dwight D. Eisenhower's first year as president of the United States.
