This classic Indian Head cent is the first bronze issue of the series. And because the design changed later in the year, it`s also a one-year-only type coin! As the Civil War raged on, copper-nickel cents vanished from circulation along with gold and silver. So the U.S. Mint began striking Indian Head cents in bronze. Obverse depicts Liberty with rounded bust in a Native American headdress. Reverse of coin features oak wreath and shield. A must for every Indian Head cent collector!
