For the first time ever, the Philadelphia Mint has struck 1¢ coins with "P" mint marks! The historic one-year-only coins are honoring the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Mint – established in Philadelphia in 1792. Prior to these coins, the only mint-marked 1¢ coins were those struck at Denver with "D" mint marks and San Francisco with "S" mint marks.
The landmark 2017-P Lincoln cents have been quietly released into circulation. The first "P" mint mark cents were released in early January, and before long, a sharp-eyed collector discovered one in North Carolina. The coins will continue to be released into circulation, but "P" mint mark cents will only be issued during 2017. Lincoln cents struck at Philadelphia in 2018 and beyond will return to their usual "no-mint-mark" format.
