For the first time ever, the Philadelphia Mint has struck 1¢ coins with "P" mint marks! The historic one-year-only coins are honoring the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Mint – established in Philadelphia in 1792. Prior to these coins, the only mint-marked 1¢ coins were those struck at Denver with "D" mint marks and San Francisco with "S" mint marks.
The landmark 2017-P Lincoln cents have been quietly released into circulation. The first "P" mint mark cents were released in early January, and before long, a sharp-eyed collector discovered one in North Carolina. The coins will continue to be released into circulation, but "P" mint mark cents will only be issued during 2017.
