The Liberty Head $5 gold piece (or half eagle) featured such a popular design that it remained on U.S. quarter eagle coins from 1839 to 1908. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this $5 coin bears a classic portrait of Liberty on the obverse, and an eagle with a shield on its breast on the reverse. The only significant change to the design in its 70-year run was the addition of the motto "in God we trust" to the reverse in 1866.
