When Louisiana seceded from the Union in January 1861, it took control of the New Orleans Mint, a branch of the U.S. Mint. Two months later, the Confederacy took control of the facility – making that three different governments within ten weeks! After the war, control of the mint again belonged to the United States, and 90% silver Morgans like these were minted there until 1904.
