Morgans were first minted in Philadelphia, where controversy arose over the eagle's tail feathers! Just 750,000 Morgans with 8 tail feathers were struck before the design was changed to 7 feathers. So with an estimated 147 million collectors, fewer than 1 in 200 can ever own this complete set. Some 8-feather coins were overstruck with a 7-feather die, creating the famous “7 over 8” variety. Today, because these 1878 varieties are very elusive, we buy them any time we can!
