1864 Indian Head Cent, with L, Brown

With "L" on ribbon. Attractive light golden highlights over medium brown fields. Very popular, semi-key date of the Indian Head series. The 1864 obverse was redesigned late in the year, making the portrait sharper and a dding designer James B. Longacre's initial (L) to the ribbon of the Indian's headdress. The act of April 22, 1864 discontinued the use of copper-nickel alloy for cents, governing a change to bronze. This act was put into place for cents and the new two cent coin. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appeared for the first time during this year, on the new two cent coin.
