1935A "R" & "S" $1 Silver Certificate Set, Very Good

Concerned about availability of currency paper in 1944 during WWII, the government sought to extend the life of paper money. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing printed a small quantity of specially marked 1935A Series $1 Silver Certificates on regular paper, and others on experimental paper designed to be more durable. After producing less than 1.2 million of each for circulation, the BEP planned to verify their condition upon redemption.

  • Scarce; few notes issued or redeemed
  • Very Good condition
  • Regular notes bear large red “R”
  • Special test notes bear red “S”

  • The government’s experiment was inconclusive as the public quickly noticed the unusual red letters, and pulled many from circulation. Now more than 60 years later, these two scarce, historic WWII notes are available for your collection – order today!
